I can’t say that I am a morning person. Mornings start way too early in the day and the pressure of coming to a decision regarding today’s choice of breakfast cereal at such an hour can be overwhelming to a mind just pulled from the comfort of slumber. Anyway, I went with Rice Krispies and then pressed the play button on “Saints” by Subespai. After all, you can never have too much ambience when you are on the snap, crackle and pop path.
Subespai – aka Mauri Edo – takes the longform route with his assembly of found sounds and synthetic seasoning on the two tracks on this release – “St. Lawrence” and St. Anthony – each passing the finishing line at about the 28 minute mark. Low key these tracks most certainly are with the leisurely pace allowing the Subespai artistic vision to slowly and methodically take shape. Not much really happens in terms of the development of a musical structure but that is so often the way of those who might be categorised within the ambient genre as the intent is not to entertain but to subtly distract you from physical matters and put you on a journey to a potentially more metaphysical plane.
As a soundtrack for relaxation, “Saints” should prove quite effective even if it is likely that you will need intimacy with your headphones to gain the expected benefits. Once that is done, Subespai will most likely guide you inside yourself.
Available on cassette from Bandcamp and in digital form from the usual places.
