Turn your sails into the wind and you might find that your musical destination of the day isn’t quite where you thought it might be. I, for example, thought I was going to visit the land of rock and roll revivalism and, instead, I found myself listening to “No Luck Yet” by The Nearlies.
There is some degree of rock, ska and, indeed, surf influence to be found in these songs yet it seems to be the way of The Nearlies to avoid festival crowd pleasing antics and replace such antics with a rather more laconic presentation. The female vocals make the most of the rather dry lyrics and there is an omnipresent saxophone included to provide both the retro stylisations and the counterpoint to the expected guitar solos and square to the beat drums.
The Nearlies don’t quite fit the norm but any band who can throw in a convincingly laidback cover of a trash classic like “Viva Las Vegas” is always going to be alright by me and that fact alone makes “No Luck Yet” worthy of a listen.
