You have to admire Dagny. She must have a deep and through appreciation of irony as she has released a new album called “Dancefloor Electronica” that pulls off the trick of making her music sound so familiar that you think that each song must be a cover version. This might seem like success through the subversion of individuality but it might also be an example of the tactical use of smoke and mirrors.

Certainly, every dancefloor trope of the last three decades is plundered over the course of these ten (and an intro) songs with all the beats having DJ familiarity for ease of integration into the extended club mix that is the life of the night people. That said, Dagny never sounds less than convincing with her processed princess sound morphing into a melody enhanced reason to dance all night whilst wondering if what you are hearing is actually a B side from somebody more famous.

That’s what I mean by an appreciation of irony. This album could be by anyone with laptop powered musical ambitions yet this would appear to be a deliberate choice by Dagny with her usual, rather clever, urban sentiments subsumed in a sea of style in the, once again deliberate, search for commercial success and it would indeed be ironic if this were to be the album that broke Dagny out into the global scene. I wish her album every success.
