Woke up this morning and thought I was in Montréal. Of course I wasn’t but exposure to the amount of sunshine that we have had recently is highly likely to affect your perception of location. Anyway, since Montréal is now in my mind, how about “Midnight Blue” by Silka Weil?

Silka Weil hails from Montréal – hence the spur of the moment segue – and “Midnight Blue” is her sophomore EP. On her EP, she takes the quality over quantity approach with a mere three songs contained therein to get your interest into first gear and, with a notable degree of confidence, she also chooses to use musicianship over digital trickery to get her literate verses and choruses over the attention deficit barrier. Her voice also exudes confidence and, with sentiment never far behind her words, it doesn’t take long to absorb her message into your understanding.

“Midnight Blue” is a very decent demonstration of the kind of talent that the mainstream used to hunt and exploit. Silka Weil makes the most of her musical maturity and these three songs duly combine emotional resonance with that certain poetic quality that makes these few minutes spent with her seem entirely worthwhile.

Available from Bandcamp and the usual digital places.
