Where does the idle mind wander when all main roads to the inside have been closed for roadworks and the diversions have not yet been signposted? That might well be an ecumenical matter and an album like “Small Modernist House In Woodland Setting” by Enofa will give you plenty of time to ponder the true meaning of such things.
On vinyl, this album runs to four sides so there is much to be discovered in the grooves as all those loops and samples are combined into the kind of artistic statement that might best be described as understated. Thes eighteen unforced extemporisations are indeed fluent in execution with only occasional moments of discord entering this timeless equation for sonic equality. There are even hints of a soundtrack source of melodic inspiration carefully placed in parallel with jarring soundbites to encourage closer attention on the part of the listener yet, while enforced consistency is always key in this near ambient genre, the more deliberately dissonant tracks such as “Centipedes From An Angry Place” or “Siobhan and Roisin Dance a Ceilidh” are the ones that have the most obvious effect on the alcohol fuelled, yet still conscious, mind.
Given its running time, “Small Modernist House In Woodland Setting” could well be seen as a rambling indulgence even if judged by the standards of the ambient genre yet it is undeniable that there is both clear intent and art in all that Enofa does and that saves the day for this album.
