It is perhaps interesting that punk wasn’t born yesterday or, indeed, in several of the decades before yesterday and yet punk abides forever with MC16 proving that they are keepers of the faith and their album “We’re Gonna Need a Milkman” might therefore be, duly and verily, regarded as a collection of hymns sung in the lost voice of protest.
Punk never was about musical complexity and, with the occasional stylistic diversion notwithstanding, MC16 stick close to the rules of the genre playbook yet this is not an actual limitation for it is to this band’s credit that they have plenty of words that target the inequalities and inequities of this morally and spiritually bankrupt society within which we are all trapped without, thankfully, exorcising the well-kent devil of the past that once held court in 10 Downing Street. It should also be noted that MC16 also have a playful side - which is something many would consider unusual for a punk band – and they even choose to finish this album on a quasi-theatrical note with “End on a High”.
MC16 are a band with something worthy and relevant to say and they do so with a notable degree of energy and style. Punk may well be a sound of yesterday but there is no doubt that MC16 speak the words of today and I, on a personal note, found “We’re Gonna Need a Milkman” to be a welcome and very satisfying sonic snack.
Available from Bandcamp and, no doubt, other places.
