I can’t say that I listen to a lot of jazz music but, if only to recalibrate my tired ears to some baseline melodic level after extended exposure to melodic metal and pure thrash, I took a listen to “I Like The Sunrise” by the no doubt redoubtable Hannah Gill.
Taking songs made popular by Duke Ellington is a distinctly conventional, even safe, choice yet these reverential interpretations of songs already familiar to many highlight just how eloquent and elegant a singer that Hannah Gill is. Her diction has that perfection that only practice can bring and she does more than justice to the literate lyrics of these songwriters of days gone by and it goes without saying – although I am going to say it anyway – that her accompanists demonstrate the kind of musical fluency that no computer can ever emulate.
Solidly and elegantly performed, “I Like The Sunrise” is the kind of album that evokes the sounds of the supper clubs from back in the days when people dressed for dinner and I would imagine that is exactly what Hannah Gill intended.
