BluesBunny does not know what to make of this one. It is a CD of covers of soul classics such as "In the Midnight Hour" and "Pain in My Heart" and if you are a soul purist then listening to this CD will be a traumatic experience. The results bear little resemblance to those classic tracks that we all know and love. It is truly - and we mean truly - a jaw dropping experience.
Not a lot seems to be known about Princess Tina (aka actress Tina Kay as far as we can tell). It really is difficult to categorise her approach to singing. Too dramatic to be karaoke, it is unique for sure. However, there is a strange, sick, appeal to her voice with the tinny, plastic backing tracks just adding to the curious appeal of that unusual vocal style. The production - such as it is - can be blamed on a certain Mr Lenis Guess (yes, it is Northern Soul legend Lenis Guess of "Too Many Nights" and "Falling Deeper in Love" fame). The CD also credits him with the album concept which is rather worrying as most producers would be in denial after hearing such results of their efforts.
It has to be said that the BluesBunny has listened to this CD on many occasions since it was purchased (money was actually spent!) and it never fails to amaze. Way back in the days of punk, it was said that it was more important to play in a band than be a musician. As Princess Tina has remained true to the punk ethos, we have to award her a full 5 carrot rating. So buy it and be amazed. Possibly a future collector's item as well? Stranger things have happened. Available from CD Baby.
