There is no shortage of new bands in central Scotland and consequently no shortage of demos so why did this band manage to get a review?. Potential, that's why.

Annie Stevenson are a four piece of band with a couple of very respectable songwriters in Tom Boyd and Nick Scroggie. It would be easy to file them under the all encompassing indie rock genre that pollutes the airwaves and clubs of this once prosperous land but there is a bit of magic on show here. The power chords are present and correct and they might even have the right haircuts (even though it is difficult to tell from the cover art) but it is the songs that really matter. Lyrically, there is a bit of social commentary but there is also melody with neo punk power keeping "Joyride" ahead of a pack that was otherwise led by "Good as Good Gets". The press release with this 4 track demo compared them to Nirvana and Blur but I'd say better comparisons would be made with My Bloody Valentine and Wire (God, I've got a long memory!).

It's not hard to like this band. They manage to show respect for their musical influences without becoming a reflection of someone else's past glories. I'd be interested in seeing them live and that means that this little demo has done its job.
