What the world needs now is class, pure class. Providing that much needed class is Mari Wilson with her album "Dolled Up". When I listen to this album, I get that Petula Clark feeling. Sort of British but not, if you follow what I mean.
Ms Wilson proves to be a formidable - and so very tasteful - interpreter of songs. Try her glamorous ball gown version of "I Saw the Light" for an example. Most of the songs, however, came from the joint pen of Ms Wilson and producer Adrian York with "The Love Thing" even throwing in a bit of that classic disco sound for variety. The spacious string arrangements keep her voice company throughout and contribute to what this album just reeks of - what was it again? - class.
Returning to the Petula Clark comparison (as this is what Petula Clark did really well too), Ms Wilson has managed to make an album that has middle of the road appeal but also works really well if you actually like music.
