Almost didn't believe my eyes when this EP caught my eye in the local record shop. It is a reissue of the original Teenage Kicks EP by the Undertones. Apparently done for the song's thirtieth anniversary, it even has a replica of the original poster sleeve and - wait for it - replica ring marks!
The songs on this EP are old friends now. After all, what can you say about "Teenage Kicks" that has not been said before. It's a fantastic song that epitomises youthful rebellion. The rest of the songs are less commercial but remain fine examples of the punk sound prevalent in those days with the Ramones like "Emergency Case" standing out.
The key thing that comes to mind whilst listening to these songs again is the sheer energy and exuberance of the performances. Without the many wonders of computers, the rawness shines through and it also has to be said that I had forgotten just how good a singer Fergal Sharkey was.
This EP should be used in music lessons in schools. That way, the scourge of the angst ridden, acoustic guitar powered singer songwriter could perhaps be eliminated.
