This release by Kochka is representative of what is becoming the common sound of bands in Glasgow. At least it is of the ones that have overcome their fixation with Oasis and The Stone Roses. I suppose this sound could best be described as indie rock with added melody
Anyway, these four tracks hold little in the way of surprises for the listener. Musically Kochka could be any of a dozen bands if it were not for the distinctive warbling - a description, not a criticism - of Markk Donnelly bringing some style to the proceedings. Oddly enough, the title track "Numbers" is the most pedestrian and uninspired of the four tracks making up this EP. Thankfully, "Little Saline" raises the bar a bit but it has to be said that the downbeat (in more ways than one) "Big Mix Up" was the star of this show.
As is so often the case with Glasgow bands, Kochka are burdened with a dull and flat production sound that does little to inspire the ears. It is early days for this band, however, and they do show promise.
