Mainstream country music doesn't seem to get that much attention these days as our attentions are drawn by the critical acclaim to sub genres like bluegrass and americana. Nonetheless, trying to make it big in Nashville is still a popular pastime amongst singers even today. Following that approach is Texan Dixie Trahan with her self titled album.
As an album, it sounds polished and easily the match of major label product whilst Ms Trahan attacks the songs with gusto and confidence. However the songs don't really give her much to work with as they tend to run right up the middle of the road. Having said that, the ultra commercial "You're The Ticket" does stand out from the crowd and Ms Trahan's sensitive reading of "Too Far Gone" shows true class and brings new life to this country standard. Overall, the album is radio friendly and that is the major problem with it. You're let with the feeling that Ms Trahan is trying to please too many masters rather than striking out and doing her own thing. On the evidence of my ears, there isn't a ballad on this planet that she couldn't own if she wanted to.
The verdict? Dixie Trahan outshines the songs on this album.
