I've got a nice cup of tea in one hand and the debut album from Donna Geddes in the other and that seems kind of appropriate for this is not hard drinking music and Ms Geddes takes us on a journey done an altogether more civilised, jazzier path.
Confident performances are the norm throughout this album. Not a step falls out of place amongst the assembled musicians and Ms Geddes' vocals guide things along nicely. The choice of material does invite comment though. For example, "Three Cool Cats" ends up sounding somewhat leaden and out of place whilst the eloquent "Vivienne" could dance on a spider's web. There's also a fine version of "Rhumba Girl" (always a favourite song of mine) that must be mentioned.
Though it is almost too tasteful, this is still an eminently likeable and well executed album that will surely please many. It certainly won't frighten your maiden aunt so your place in her will remains assured.
