It was just one of those things. The first time and the second time that I saw Ned Collette live were on consecutive nights. Both times he lost out to a mix of pitiful attendance and that peculiarly Glaswegian inability to appreciate any form of self deprecating humour.
Being thorough - actually rubbish beer in both venues left me with far more money in my pocket at the end of the night than is usual - I purchased this album. Interestingly, the more that you listen to it, the more complex it becomes. There are layers and layers in there. The lyrics likewise show an uncommon eloquence - "Lost and Found" just swirls around in your head for example. Likewise, "The Country With A Smile" makes you pause for thought.
The downside here is that this album is just too laidback. So much so that it verges on melancholy. You really have to be in the mood for this album as it isn't the kind of thing that you would stick in the car's CD player. Maybe the best way of putting it is that this album is one you come to appreciate rather than one you would come to love.
