There was this time I was in this manky basement venue in Glasgow and I saw a band. This band was impressive showing both a remarkable musical dexterity along with an affinity for pretty tunes. That band was Zoey Van Goey.

This album is their debut album and it is, fortunately as I often despair about the quality of Glasgow bands, a very fine effort. From the truly exquisite "Sweethearts in Disguise" to the fragile art house meanderings of "Nae Wonder", the band's confidence rings out. They show far more imagination than is usual for a Glasgow band for one thing. For another, there is Kim Moore's voice which somehow manages to combine fragility with power and emotion.

The sound does on occasion descend into murkiness but this is nonetheless an album that you should hear. Intelligence and good tunes rarely come together but this album is a text book example of how to do it.
