Most anybody who claims to have a blanket dislike of pop music surely has issues. However, if you truly do fit this description then prove yourself wrong and listen to Ingrid Michaelson's new CD. As a project in association with Stand Up 2 Cancer, you can also be sure that the album has been made with good intentions.
Since it'll probably not escape your head for weeks, the title track, in all its simple glory, is surely destined to propel the singer into mainstream scrutiny. An excellent start to the album. Soon after comes a version of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" that may provoke an involuntary reaction from your tear ducts. This was a brave move, because too many have dragged this song through the mud. Not Ingrid!
Ingrid's voice keeps you under its spell on "Keep Breathing" with some wonderful harmonies to be heard. Also interesting is the fact that a few of the tracks on the album are taken from live performances. What results is a healthy balance of wonderfully constructed pop songs with the live cuts proving that Ms Michaelson is no tool of the recording industry. Her talent is her own.
Ingrid's album connects with the soul of the listener, in a way that is soothing and warm. But she doesn't seem the kind that won't relinquish your soul - too nice. For fear of typing an essay, I'll keep it short: Make room on your CD rack!
