Patrick Coman has a somewhat interesting biography. Now resident in Germany, he is actually from Oklahoma via Nashville. With the release of his “Used Records” EP, he gives us the opportunity to hear if his travels have influenced his music.
The answer is no, by the way. Unfortunately, he sounds like so many mid west singer songwriters. The songs have the simplest of arrangements so the weight of his words ends up being carried by his laidback semi-drawl of a voice and though song titles like “Amsterdam” and “Streets of Berlin” imply a wandering soul, there is nothing in them to suggest, for example, it is Berlin, Germany rather than Berlin, Wisconsin that is being referred to. The best song was the countrified “Maria”.
This EP makes for an easy listen but it has to be said that whilst capable, Patrick Coman is not particularly distinctive either as a singer or a songwriter. There you go, damned with faint praise!
