The sun wasn't shining and there was snow in the ground and I'm thinking about Maria McKee. Don't really know why but it caused me to rummage through the Bluesbunny Vinyl Vault and unearth this single by her eighties band Lone Justice. A limited edition double single in a gatefold sleeve, it also featured a couple of live tracks. Record companies made more of an effort in those days…
Well the record company weren't shy with their money bringing in the big guns of the time Little Steven and Jimmy Iovine on production duties to give the no doubt desired result of a full speed ahead rock song with our Maria kicking it up like a rock chick should. Radio friendly for its time and certainly as rewarding today - or at least it is with the volume cranked right up (which it was!).
The flipside is a restrained ballad called "If You Don't Like The Rain" that sounds like something that the Bangles would have used as a filler track on an album. Not particularly exciting.
On an interesting note - well interesting to the record collector anyway - the other single with this release has a different catalogue number (SAM333) and contains live versions of Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane" (not entirely successful) and a rather more endearing, countrified - and probably truer to her roots - "Don't Toss Us Away". A real sweetheart of a song, actually, and a pointer to Maria McKee's then imminent solo career.
