There's a big world of music out there - far more than one man could ever hope to explore - so it was no surprise that the talented Bill Bachmann had escaped the Bluesbunny's notice. However, his new album "Big World Out There" had made it all the way across the Atlantic to Bluesbunny Towers. Oh, there's always time for one more review…
Bill Bachmann can handle the guitar well and the songs on this album would fit neatly into the portfolio of any self respecting Greenwich Village folk song salesmen. There is a dated - maybe timeless would be a better word - feel to these songs. Not that there isn't humour on show (such as the delightfully named "The Ballad of Townes Van Crier and Pasqualina") but there is far more sentiment. No bad thing in these cold days of economic doom, of course, and I was drawn to think of the likes of Lee Hazelwood as I listened to this album.
Despite the hint of geography teacher slumming it that pervades the proceedings - Bill Bachmann just doesn't seem like a proper musician capable of mining the depths of depravity - this is a likeable and well preformed album that never seems to be trying too hard. It doesn't plough any new furrows but I did enjoy listening to it.
