There must be an inexhaustible supply of twee pop in the world if Wee Pop's (Britain's cutest record label) release schedule is anything to go by. Clattering through the letterbox this time was a four song EP from British band Mexican Kids at Home.
As the twee pop genre is not one to have its boundaries stretched, no real surprises were expected. Well, there was one actually. This isn't really twee pop at all. The songs are indeed lightweight and quite cute in tone but there's some serious musical hitting power here with some downright wicked violin just begging to be noticed. Lyrically, there's a bleaker outlook on life hiding underneath it all and this is illustrated best in "One Day Older Than Today". The end result is a hell of a lot closer to traditional folk music - try "Animal Skins" for another example - than the dreaded twee pop.
Beautifully packaged (as always), this EP proved to be a great deal better than I had expected. I was left wanting more and you can't really ask for more than that.
