This whole twee/bedroom/bedsit pop genre is starting to worry me. There seems to be a helluva lot of it about all the way from what might be called 'A' listers like The Smittens to bands in Sweden you've never heard of before - that might have something to do with the price of beer in that country, of course - and Dexter Poindexter who is from Illinois apparently. From what I can determine, beer isn't that expensive in Illinois.
This EP is released on Wee Pop Records in a limited edition of 160 copies and it proved to be a pleasing release. True, there are not many surprises but this is a genre that rarely welcomes surprises but the execution of the songs is a cut above the average. Songs like "A Pleasant View" move onwards in a relentless manner evoking desperation - no songs about furry rodents here! Even when our Dexter goes all jaunty on us as with "All In", the lyrics speak of darker things. I suppose that's the point I'm trying to make - the songs sound light and fluffy but the song writing shows a lot more depth than you would expect. The arrangement likewise show far more precision and imagination than is usual.
I'll admit that it took me a few listens before I appreciated this release fully. Maybe you should give Dexter Poindexter a spin or three too?
