Song reviews

  Summer Song by YUAR

Summer Song cover art

Soothing

YUAR go all warm and fuzzy with their song “Summer Song”. The synths stick to the playbook for this sort of thing but there is enough wistful endeavour in the singer’s voice to both give life to the lyrics and make an imprint on your memory.

  Atlas Fugged by Bony Macaroni

Atlas Fugged cover art

Pop Punk

Bony Macaroni spread their retro cheese all over their new song “Atlas Fugged” and then throw on a tasty bit of teen angst to make their musical sandwich complete. Their Weezer worship continues but, hey, you can’t go far wrong with the right historical perspective.

  LowLowLow by Sail By Summer

Downbeat

Lightweight but curiously downbeat for a song released at this time of year, Sail By Summer get all reflective and take their song “LowLowLow” for a walk down the heavily looped trail to the rose tinted days of summers past.

Two Way Glass by Let Man Loose

Two Way Glass cover art

Sharp

Rough and ready is pretty much the indie rock way but Let Man Loose throw in a surprise amongst the sweaty guitar riffs by injecting some undeniably sharp lyrics to thus make their song “Two Way Glass” more modern and memorable than most will ever manage.

  Leave by Jula

Leave cover art

Dream

“Leave” is the sort of song that will never be short on staying power and Jula walks the song along a meandering mystical path littered with emotional intensity and first degree melancholy. The lyrics seem lost but her true intent is easily found.

It Takes A Lot To Laugh by The Hector Collectors

Ironic

Ha! Bet you thought that guitar powered indie irony had fallen down the drain of apathy but, no, The Hector Collectors still fly the flag with “It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes a 25 Minute Response Video to DESTROY your Argument” (to use the song’s Sunday name). Maverick magical!

  Red Color by Andi Pomato

Red Color cover art

Melodic

Giving us a song that is easy to like, Andi Pomato has drawn his retro influences from the days of proper song writing and it is therefore no surprise that melody and upbeat lyrics fuel the fire underneath his song “Red Color”. I feel better already.

Don’t Tell My Mother by KTG

Don’t Tell My Mother cover art

Wholesome

KTG keeps it wholesome but still manages to highlight her independent streak with her song “Don’t Tell My Mother”. It is no insult to call a song like this “coffee shop friendly” when the people whom frequent such places will undoubtedly become her front line fans.

  Tame by Analog

Tame cover art

Midnight

Low key and lo-fi rock might be almost fashionable these days yet there is more than style worship going on here with “Tame” neatly demonstrating that Analog know how to lay down a purposeful rockstar groove whilst decorating it with the necessary grungy riffs.

Miss Sugar by The Lu Silver String band

Miss Sugar cover art

Rock

This might well be retro rock but it is undeniable that The Lu Silver String Band exude the decadent vibe that the best bands of the seventies tour bus era had and, with quality musicianship filling their tank with gasoline, “Miss Sugar” should take them down Sunset Boulevard.

Coldwater Creek by Becky and the Keys

Coldwater Creek cover art

Truth

Coolly confident pretty much describes the Becky and The Keys musical ethos with their song “Coldwater Creek” taking the retro track back to the days when the truth and chords could co-exist. Becky, herself, has a voice to make you want to follow her down to the river.

  Favorite Flavor by Virgin Miri

Favorite Flavor cover art

Ironic

I suspect that Virgin Miri is a fan of irony as her song “Favorite Flavor” seem far more vicious in both lyrics and attitude than you would normally expect from an electropop princess of our plastic times. Duly, she makes herself more interesting than most.
