Fated Ape
3 track demo
1. Sexual Footsteps
2. Morning After
3. Her Black Dog
Fated Ape come from Gloucestershire, England. Judging by the nice letter that they sent us, they are obviously well brought up and extremely polite so Bluesbunny was more than happy to take a listen to their demo.
The first song, "Sexual Footsteps", makes like a cross between the Doors and Alabama 3. There is that phased intro, the laconic vocals and the drifting pace. Strangely enough, the lyrics suggest the adventures of an aged lothario whilst the swamp flavoured guitar manages to seem both incongruous and appropriate at the same time.
"Morning After" stays in a similar groove but adds a grungier guitar sound. By this point, BluesBunny has to admit that he is getting a taste for their sound. It is very listenable but there are those rather noticeable traces of weirdness …
Rounding things is "Her Black Dog". The pace changes somewhat here. Opening with a drum machine and some suitably haunting harmonica, this bluesy song has an almost psychedelic feel to it like the Yardbirds had started jamming with Syd Barrett. That is a good trick if you can do it, mixing that lyrical weirdness into a pleasing, commercial sound. Once you listen to these tracks a few times, you come to the opinion that a lot of care and hard work has gone into them and that is to be commended.
We have a fondness for things quirky here at Bluesbunny Towers. On the basis of this rather slick demo, Fated Ape will be welcome here anytime.
