Yellow Bentines

Pay Cheque

from "Yellow Bentines"

2007

Soul comes from the heart, so they say. Pop songs come from the pens of craftsmen and are, by inference, soulless. "Pay Cheque" proved to be a revelation. This track - from the "Yellow Bentines" album - is an inspirational song that combines pop and soul.

The trumpets - remember, every great souls song had a horn section - cut through the air like headlights through the mist. The guitars stir up a sonic storm. The lyrics tear into the worship of false gods. As the band chant "Call him Messiah", you hear their message booming out of the speakers and writing itself on the billboards of the world. And it all ends with a quasi-religious organ. Drama, intelligence and it's catchy too. Just perfect!
