American bluesman Catfish Keith has been somewhat of a regular fixture at the State Bar in recent times. With over 25 years of experience on the live circuit, it is perhaps strange that he is still performing to pub-sized crowds. Did tonight's performance go any distance to suggest why?
Undeniably, yes. The smooth-talking solo blues veteran did well to keep the attention of all in attendance with some inspired slide guitar, and his respect for his loving audience was clear as day.
"Mr Catfish's Advice" was one such instance upon which the audience hushed in admiration of Keith's guitar profligacy and it was impossible not to enjoy his rendition of the dirty-minded "Salty Thing". "Goin' up North to Get My Hambone Boiled" was good as much for its lyrics as for Keith's bluesy guitar. Performing for over 90 minutes (excluding the break), there's no denying that Catfish Keith appreciates the loyalty of his fans. However, his choosing to repeat "Jitterbug Swing" upon restringing may have left a few in the audience bemused.
While Keith is a man who doesn't hide his influences, his performance was strewn with versions of other peoples songs, leaving a set that didn't so much innovate as it did imitate. It's not that Keith should not pay homage to his heroes, but that his homage should be less apparent, and his own material should be more obvious. Catfish Keith could easily outgrow the sweaty State Bar should he choose to. But I think he likes it there.
