And then you win a watch. It's not often that I can say that when doing a review but it was true tonight. Four bands kept it loud, they kept it simple and they delivered the goods. The result was that they transferred their infectious energy into the audience and the audience gave it all right back to them. Yes, I saw it with my own eyes. People were enjoying themselves!
First on were Always Until Victory. Four young guys with no shortage of youthful energy, they rattled through a set that resurrected the true spirit of punk. Maintaining an unrelentingly pace throughout, it was clear to all that they loved what they were doing and that raucous enthusiasm rubbed off on to the crowd.
Next on were Must be Something. Whilst very much of the indie genre, they also packed a considerable punch. More polished performers than the previous band, they had distinctly commercial songs and they knew how to deliver then to an audience. Now, you can't argue with that.
Annie Stevenson took to the stage next. I remember hearing a demo by this band some months ago and thinking that they showed a lot of promise. However that demo did not really reflect what I saw tonight. Underpinned by a powerhouse of a drummer, Annie Stevenson nearly took the roof off the building. Despite the might energy surge they created (up to and including invading the dance floor mid song), the distinctive factor here was actually the subtle and fresh guitar licks that punctuated their punk influenced songs. If there were a "Star of the Show" award then Annie Stevenson would have won it.
Last on were the Love Pirates and they didn't disappoint either. Older and wiser they may have been but they knew nonetheless what must be done so they cranked it up and let rip. There was more of a rock flavour to their songs and all your favourite power chords were present and correct. It was a convincing performance and just what the audience wanted. They left everybody happy. Great to see that.
A fun night was clearly had by all. The sound was good too and the venue ran out of Guinness. It's only rock and roll but I like it, yes I do!
